"Dark clouds are drifting through the forest. The branches of the trees are covered over and over with lichens, bromeliads and orchids. In the humid, greyish-green darkness of the forest only some sparsely distributed red blossoms shine out.
These mysterious fog-shrouded forests are the habitat of the spectacled bears. They feed on a multitude of plants but mainly on bromeliads which they find all over the trees. They are excellent climbers and even build nests in the branches for sleeping and feeding.
A typical characteristic is the white pattern which always surrounds the eyes and runs along the throat and breast. Each bear shows an individual kind of pattern which may be compared to the human fingerprint.
Spectacled bears are rarely observed in their natural habitat since they live hidden in remote and hardly accessible areas.
But all summer and autumn the Berlin Zoo "Tierpark" offered me the opportunity to watch and study spectacled bears and their cubs growing up."
